Wildfire Rips Through 300 Acres Of Wharton State Forest (Updated)

Firefighters were working to contain a 300-acre wildfire burning at Wharton State Forest in Burlington and Camden counties on Wednesday, April 24, authorities said.

The fire was about 40 percent contained along Jackson Road in Shamong, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service as of 3 p.m.

The Forest Fire Service has responded to the wildfire with ground crews and an observation helicopter. Crews are utilizing a backfire operation to burn fuel ahead of the main body of fire which will help aid containment efforts, state forest fire officials said.

Among the park closures are:

  • The Goshen Campground has been evacuated and is closed
  • Burnt Mill Trail is closed
  • Goshen Pond Trail is closed
  • Sleeper Creek Trail is closed

No structures were threatened, officials said. The next update is set for 8 p.m.
